The Internet is one of the solid evidence that mankind can
make great innovation if they have the will to explore and high spirit of
teamwork. According to Wikipedia, the history of the Internet began with the
development of electronic computers in the 1950’s. The Internet was
commercialized in 1995 and since the mid 1990’s the Internet has made a drastic
impact on culture, commerce and
communication.
Since Internet has been a giant help to everyone with the
existence of Uncle Google and Auntie Wiki, it must only have advantages, right?
Hehehe. Most people have agreed with the statement that “Internet has bring
many advantages to them”. However, the Internet also has it’s disadvantages
such as spamming, pornography, online fraud and etc.
The main idea of the Internet is to help people to look for
information and has no boundary whatsoever. We have more than hundreds search engines.
We also have YahooAsk!, Ask.com and many more to answer our questions on many
categories. The uniqueness of Wikipedia is it allow everyone.EVERYONE. to add
or change information on it. Althought it is quite helpful, this method could
also be misleading as we are sure that not all people want to help.
Internet is very beneficial in a way that it promotes faster
communication between users of Internet. Social networking sites offered
services such as Instant Messaging (IM) and emails. One can reached his family,
friends easily with Skype or Yahoo Messenger. People can share useful information
they obtained and spread it fast with Twitter or Facebook. This situation
applied during emergency hour. Although email is very useful , account user
might experience spamming or virus threat. They might lost all the important email
in their inbox. This is very troublesome.
Being able to download videos,music and movies is one of the
best feature of the Internet. First of all it is free and second you can obtain
it at anytime. As an example, you can download a movie, hours after it is out
at the cinema. Sounds good. From my point of view, if we download entertainment
related stuff from the internet, we are actually reducing the piracy rate
right? NO? ok…
Other than that, the Internet promotes pornography like
nobody business. Users can obtain pornography material very easily. What will
happen if kids ages 10-13 stumbles to pornography and become addicted to it? If
this does happen, we are actually raising a generation who has lost it’s own
moral value and self conscience. For me there should be age restriction to
those who are browsing for videos online but there should be no age restrictions
to those who want to sign up for social networking site.
Lastly, personal information that we share online might put
our lives on danger. Our date of birth could be rearranged to crack our ATM
card password. Our phone number could be use against us. Rapist might use our
phone number to track us. The friendship that you have with strangers online
may not be genuine as you hope so. Your “friendship” might lead to a rape or
worse being killed. Everyone online might be a psychopath, serial killer or
rapist. You are not safe even though you are only connecting virtually.
All I got to say is I thank God for the Internet. It has may
advantages and disadvantages. You just gotta be careful and not to be trick to
the dark side of the Internet.
